Psychologic disorder

Ongoing dysfunctional pattern of thought, emotion, behavior that causes distress or impairs normal functioning

Biologic: functioning of the body
Psychologic: patterns of an individuals thoughts
Social: socioeconomic status, homelessness, abuse

Stigma

Defect that indicates a person is culturally devalued; negative stigma slows the healing of the mentally ill

Anxiety

Nervousness we sometimes experience about something that may happen

Anxiety disorder

Psychologic disturbances marked by irrational fears, often of everyday objects and situations

Generalized anxiety disorder

Psychologic disorder in which a person excessively worries about life for 6+ months

Panic disorder

Psychologic disorder with sudden and recurrent panic attacks

Agoraphobia

Anxiety about 2+ things

OCD

Individual continuously experiences obsessions and engages in compulsions/repetitive behavior or mental acts to calm the behavior

What causes disorders?

Genetic predisposition + environmental factors (life stressors)

Mood

Positive or negative feelings that background how we perceive the workd

Mood/affective disorder

Psychological disorder which causes someone to experience life in an extremely negative way

Dysthemia

Mild but chronic symptoms lasting for at least 2 years; less severe than clinical depression, but lasts longer

MDD (clinical depression)

All encompassing low mood accompanied by low self esteem and loss of interest in general things

Bipolar

Mood swings from euphoria to depression; manic episode: impulsive and agitated

Schizophrenia

Delusions, hallucinations, loss of contact with reality, inappropriate affect, disorganized speech, social withdrawal

3 sets of symptoms of schizophrenia:

Positive: abnormal behaviors not present in unaffected ppl
Negative: lack of behaviors present in unaffected ppl
Cognitive: changes in cognitive processes; difficulty processing info and making decisions

Psychosis

Loss of touch with reality

Derailment

Switching from one topic to another without shifts

Inappropriate affect

Acting outside of whats considered socially normal

Catatonia

Unresponsive to others

Personality disorder

Characterized by inflexible patterns of thinking, feeling, or relating to others

3 clusters of personality disorders

Odd/eccentric: eccentric mannerisms, extreme distrust in others, extreme introversion
Dramatic/erratic: issues with crime/legal problems, unstable mood/intense relationships, constant attention seeking, inflated sense of self importance
Anxious/inhibited: socially anxious, excessively clingy, perfectionist

Borderline personality disorder

Prolonged disturbance of personality; unstable relationships, identity problems, self destructive behavior

Antisocial personality disorder

Disregard for/ violation of the rights of others

Which disorder is controversial?

Dissociative identity disorder (multiple personalities); only a few psychologists diagnose most of these disorders, some don't even believe its an actual thing :p
