Flashcards in Unit 4 Deck (26):
0

Brain stem

Breathing, attention, food

1

Medulla

Area of brain stem that controls heart rate and breathing

2

Pons

Controls body mvmt, balance, walking

3

Reticular formation

Runs through medulla and pons; arousal and attention

4

Thalamus

Sits above brain stem, transmits info btwn body and higher brain; sleep!

5

Cerebellum

Coordinates voluntary mvmts

6

Limbic system

Memory and emotions

7

Amygdala

Regulates perception of and reactions to fear and aggression

8

Hypothalamus

Regulates body temp, hunger, thirst, sex drive; gives pleasure

9

Hippocampus

Long term memory

10

Cerebral cortex

Language and complex skills

11

Glial cells

Surround/link neurons to protect them, provide nutrients and absorb neurotransmitters

12

Frontal lobe

Thinking, planning, judging, memory; motor strip

13

Parietal lobe

Receives info about touch; sensory

14

Occipital lobe

Visual info

15

Temporal lobe

Hearing and language

16

Contralateral control

Right brain controls left body; left brain controls right body

17

Two approaches to studying brain

Lesion: damage to what area causes what brain function to dysfunction

Cadaver: looking at the physical brain

18

5 noninvasive techniques

Single unit microelectrode: the microelectrode is inserted near a single neuron
Electroencephalograph(EEG): patterns of brain activity over time
Positron emission tomography(PET): tracks mvmt of radioactively labelled things in the brain
fMRI: magnetic field to detect brain structure
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS): magnets to temporarily deactivate an area of the brain

19

Autonomic nervous system

Controls involuntary activities of the PNS

20

Somatic NS

Voluntary activities of the PNS

21

Sympathic NS

Part of ANS that goes away from homeostasis

22

Parasympathetic NS

Brings ANS back to homeostasis

23

Pituitary

Hormone center of the brain

24

Pineal

Sleep cycle

25

Adrenal

Regulates salt concentration, metabolism, immune system, sexual devpt and fxn
