Flashcards in Unit 5 Deck (16):
0

Classical conditioning

Learning that occurs when a neutral stimulus becomes associated with an unconditioned, natural stimulus to produce a given behavior

1

Extinction

Reduction in strength of a response when the CS is repeatedly given w/o the US; full extinction doesn't exist

2

Spontaneous recovery

Increase in nat'l response to CS following extinction

3

Generalization

Tendency to respond to stimuli that resemble the CS

4

Discrimination

Tendency to respond differently to stimuli that are similar but not identical

5

Second order conditioning

Existing CS becomes the US for a new CS

6

Operant conditioning

Learning from the consequences of a behavior

7

Law of Effect

Principle that successful responses are pleasurable and are remembered more easily than unsuccessful responses, which are unpleasant

8

Continuous reinforcement schedule:

Desired response is reinforced every time it occurs

9

Partial reinforcement schedule:

Responses are sometimes reinforced and sometimes not

10

4 types of partial reinforcement:

Fixed ratio: reinforced after a specific number of responses
Variable ratio: reinforced after an average number of responses
Fixed interval: reinforced a specific time interval after the response
Variable interval: reinforced after an avg amount of time

11

Shaping

Guiding an organisms behavior toward a specific outcome

12

Primary reinforcer

Stimuli naturally enjoyed by an organism; food, water, sex

13

Secondary reinforcer:

Neutral stimulus trained to be associated with a primary reinforcer

14

Insight

Sudden understanding of a solution to a problem

15

Latent learning

Learning that is not reinforced and not demonstrated until there's a motivation to do so
