Unit 19 Flashcards
(8 cards)
Leading cause of death
Heart Disease
women on average die 10 years later
Factors contributing to CVD
smoking hypertension hgh LDL / low HDL obesity ("apple shape") glucose intolerance lack of exercise hereditary gender menopause
Atherosclerosis
- increases plaque formation in the arteries
two conditions that interrelated and work together to increase atherosclerosis
- chronic inflammation
- higher cholesterol and lipids
Production of lipoproteins
Chylomicron travels through blood to cells that need it
Dietary trycglyceride and delivers it to the cells
Gets smaller, fats come off as triglycerides
HDL
Good cholesterol because it takes the cholesterols out of the tissues and arteries and takes it back to the liver to be recycled
The liver can also make fat
When this happens it packages it in VLDL
Goes the triglycerides the liver makes and makes it available to the body
When carried to cells it becomes LDL
LDL – carries mostly cholesterol
%’s of how much triglycerides make up
Chylomicron 80% triglyceride
VLDL = 50% triglyceride
LDL = 50% cholesterol
HDL = 50% protein
HDL
Good Cholesterol
helps remove cholesterol from the blood
escorts it to the liver for excretion
LDL
Bad cholesterol
incorporated into plaque
high LDL increases chances of atherosclerosis and heart disease
