UNIT 3, AOS2, Dot point 5 (brain structures) Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are implicit memories?
memories without awareness
what are explicit memories?
Explicit memories are those that require conscious effort.
What are procedural memories?
Procedural memories implicit memories that store how to do things, like riding a bike or tying your shoes.
Think of step-by-step actions your body remembers, even if your brain isn’t thinking about them.
What are declarative memories?
Declarative memories are explicit memories — meaning they require conscious effort to recall.
They include:
Semantic memory (facts and knowledge)
Episodic memory (personal experiences)
“Declare = Tell” — You can declare or talk about these memories, like telling a story (episodic) or sharing facts (semantic).
What is the hippocampus responsible for in memory?
The hippocampus is a brain structure that is mainly involved in encoding explicit memories (like facts and personal experiences).
What is the amygdala responsible for in memory?
The amygdala is a brain structure that helps encode the emotional parts of memories, especially fear and other strong emotions.
What is the neocortex responsible for in memory?
The neocortex is a brain structure that stores explicit memories, such as facts and personal experiences.
What is the role of the basal ganglia?
It is a brain structure that encodes and stores implicit (procedural) memories and unconscious habits and behaviours. It is associated with habit-forming, linking, and stimulus and response learning.
What does the cerebellum do?
It is a brain structure that encodes and stores implicit procedural memories.
As a brain structure, it also controls balance, co-ordination, movement, and motor skills.
