Intelligence
Ability to learn from experiences and adapt to new information (solving problems)
Intelligence test
Assessing an individual’s intelligence using scores
General Intelligence (g)
Spearman - underlies mental abilities and is measured by every task on an intelligence test
Factor analysis
Statistical procedure that identifies clusters of related items - can identify different dimensions to a total score
Savant syndrome
Person has limited mental ability but is exceptional in a specific skill
Grit
Passion and perseverance to achieve long-term goals
Emotional Intelligence
Can perceive, understand, manage, and use emotions
Mental Age
Alfred Binet - chronological age that should correspond with a level of performance
Standford-Binet
American version of the Binet intelligence test
Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
Mental age divided by chronological age and made into a %
Achievement tests
Assess learned material
Aptitude tests
Predict future performance
Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)
David Wechsler - most common intelligence test
Standardization
Developing meaningful results by comparing an individual’s results to a pool of others
Normal Curve
Bell curve
Reliability
How consistent the results of the test are
Validity
How much the test tests what it says it will
Content Validity
Extent to which a test samples the behavior that is of interest
Predictive validity
How successful a test is at predicting future performance it is designed to predict
Cohort
Group of people from a given time period
Crystallized intelligence
Accumulated knowledge - increase with age
Fluid intelligence
Speed reasoning and abstract reasoning - decreases with age
Intellectual disability
Intelligence score of 70 or below - difficulty adapting to the demands of life
Down syndrome
Intellectual disability - extra copy of chromosome 21
