unit 3.2: the cerebral cortex Flashcards
what is the cerebral cortex
the outer part of the cerebellum, it is the centre of conscious thought, can also recall memories in light of experience
what are the cerebral cortex’s 3 key features
receives sensory information
co-ordinates voluntary movement
making decisions based on experience
what are the 3 main areas within the cerebral cortex
sensory areas (occipital)
motor areas (parietal)
association areas (temporal)
what is the function of the occipital lobe (sensory)
receives information as sensory impulses from receptors (sense organs)
what is the function of the parietal lobe (motor)
act on information from sensory and association areas by sending motor impulses to effects (muscles and glands)
what is the function of the temporal lobe (association)
language processing, personality, imagination and intelligence
what are the 4 types of brain scans
electroencephalogram
CAT
MRI
PET
what are brain scans used for
seeing details images of the brain, they can detect activity changes in blood flow or uptake of glucose and can allow localisation of function to be identified by showing which areas are most active whilst carrying out a particular function
what is the cerebrum and what does it do
divided into 2 halves, the left and right cerebral hemispheres, the left controls receives information from the right visual field and controls the right side of the body and the right, the left
what connects the cerebral hemispheres
the corpus callosum
what is the corpus callosum
a bundle of nerve fibres
what does the corpus callosum do
transfers information between the hemispheres
