Unit 3a Flashcards
Biopsychosocial believes we do the things we do because of
Our bodies
Our minds or thinking
The culture that we live in.
Neurons
nerve cells
Sensory neurons
Take messages from the body, up the spinal cord, to the brain
Motor neurons
Take messages from the brain to the body
Interneurons
Are neurons within the brain that “talk” to one another while thinking or processing information.
Dendrites
Branching extensions that receive messages and conduct impulses towards the cells body
Axons
Extension of a neuron through which messages pass to other neurons or muscle glands
Myelin sheath
Fatty tissue around many fibers of the neuron, enables greater transmission speed
The speed messages travel along neurons
between 2 and 200 mph
Action potential
A brief electrical charge that travels down the axon
Synapse
Gap between axon and dendrite
Neurotransmitters
Chemical messengers that take the impulse of one neuron across the synaptic gap
Reuptake
A neurotransmitter’s reabsorption by the sending neruon
Antagonists
block neural transmission
Central nervous system
The brain and spinal chord
Peripheral nervous system
Sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system
Somatic nervous system
Part of the PNS that controls the body’s skeletal muscles
Autonomic nervous system
Part of the PNS that controls the glands and muscles of internal organs
Sympathetic nervous system
Part of ANS that arouses the body, making energy in stressful situations
Parasympathetic nervous system
Part of ANS that calms the body
Endocrine system
Set of glands that secrete hormones
Hormones
Chemical messengers that effect our interest in sex, food, and aggression
Adrenal gland
Secrete epinephrine
Increases the pulse, blood pressure, and blood sugar
Epinephrine
Adrenaline
