Dialysis

A

Hemodialysis. Treatment for renal failure. Nephrologist assigned. Machine cleans out blood via a surgically created blood vessel called a fistula. Peritoneal dialysis is used for temporary treatment- no fistula

Lithotripsy

A

Uses ultrasound/sound waves to break down stones so it can be passed easier. Needs to be accurate to avoid damage to patient. pt is put under anesthesia. Can get up to 4000 shocks. Increasingly higher shockwaves.

Lithotomy

A

Surgery to remove a stone. Not used anymore- replaced with lithotripsy

Urinary Catheterization

A

Placement of flexible tube into the bladder through urethra to collect urine (CATH). Urine leaks out into a bag to be measured. Balloon is blown up inside to prevent catheter from being pulled out. Separate valve for urine samples.
