Uses Of Enzymes Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the enzymes used in biological detergents?
They’re mainly protein-digesting enzymes (protease) and fat digesting enzymes (lipase)
Enzymes can be used in what?
Biological detergents and used to change food
Why are enzymes ideal for removing stains like food and blood?
Because they break down animal and plant matter
Biological detergents are more effective at working at what temperature?
Low temperatures, such as 30 deg cel
What enzyme is used to change food?
Protease
Why is protease used in some baby foods?
Because it makes food easier for the baby to digest (because they pre-digest)
What can carbohydrase turn starch syrup into?
Syrup sugar
What can glucose glucose syrup be turned into?
Fructose syrup, using isomerase enzyme
What is fructose?
A sweetener (used in slimming fires because you can use less of it)
Why are enzymes really useful in industry?
They speed up reactions without need for high temperatures and pressures
What are some advantages of using in enzymes in industry?
They are specific only catalyse reactions you want them to, low costs because low temperatures and pressures so it saves energy, enzymes work for a long time, biodegradable and cause less pollution
What are some disadvantages of using enzymes in industry?
Some people have allergies to the enzymes, enzymes coming denatured at small temperature increases, enzymes can be expensive to produce, contamination of the enzyme with other substances can affect the reaction
