UWorld_7.04 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Cardiac, Pulmonary, other complications of carcinoid syndrome
- cardiac: valvular lesions
- pulmonary: bronchospasm
- other: niacin deficiency ==> dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia
Cause of NPH
decreased CSF absorption
TCA overdose management
- ABCs/supportive
- sodium bicarbonate
Risk for orbital cellulitis
bacterial sinusitis
Causes of crystal-induced AKI
- acyclovir
- sulfa
- MTX
- ethylene glycol
- protease inhibitors
Renal complications of acyclovir
crystal-induced AKI
Clinical presentation of crystal-induced AKI
- usually asx
- elevated creatinine w/in 1-7 days of starting drugs
- UA: hematuria, pyuria and crystals
Side effects of loop diuretics
- hypokalemia
- metabolic alkalosis
- prerenal AKI
Evaluation/management of suspected ovarian cancer
ex-lap (avoid biopsy b/c risk of spread)
Approach to adult cardiac arrest
- start CPR, give O2, attach defib
2a. if vfib/vtach ==> shock, then ==> CPR x 2min., IV access
2b. if PEA/asystole ==> CPR x 2min.; IV access, Epi q3-5min.
Characteristics of malignant otitis externa
- caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- commonly @ DM/immunosuppressed
- severe pain with drainage
- tx: anti-pseudomonal abx (ciprofloxacin)
Tick-borne vs. botulism presentation
- botulism: descending paralysis and early cranial n. involvement; pupillary abnormalities
- tick-borne paralysis: progressive ascending, no pupillary abnormalities
Causes of hypocalcemia
- hypomagnesium
- drugs
- blood transfusion
- hypoparathyroidism
- metabolic, inflammatory, neoplasm, PTH resistance
IgA nephropathy presentation
- w/in 5 days of URI
- common @ young adult men
- recurrent hematuria
IgA nephropathy dx
- normal complement
- mesangial IgA deposits on biopsy
post-strep nephropathy presentation
- 10-21 days after URI
- more common @ children
- hematuria
- adults: asx vs. acute nephritic
post-strep nephropathy dx
- low C3 complement
- elevated ASO ab
- biopsy w/subepithelial humps of C3
