16
Q

What is a RORO skip?

A

Roll-on, roll-off skip

17
Q

What is the purpose of a weighbridge?

A

Device that records the weight of both a vehicle and its contents to help calculate the disposal cost

Weighbridges are crucial for ensuring compliance with weight regulations and for calculating disposal costs.

18
Q

Name two vehicle mechanisms used to lift and drop skips.

A

Chain-lift and Hook-lift

These mechanisms allow for efficient loading and unloading of skips in various waste management operations.

19
Q

How are the skips transported/delivered to the customer?

A

They are transported by a specialised skip vehicle called a chain-lift or a hook-lift.

20
Q

What are RORO skips for?

A

RORO skips are designed for large volumes of waste and are typically used in construction and industrial environments.

21
Q

What is the purpose of skips?

A

Collection and transportation of waste materials.

22
Q

Who is a typical customer of a client?

A

A householder (called non account work), construction company (account - local builder or national) or brokers.

23
Q

What services do the skip hire companies provide?

A
  1. A delivery and collection. They deliver a skip to the house or site and collect once full.
  2. An exchange or empty and replace (E/R). If it’s filled and still more waste then you order an exchange (E/R). Client’s driver will deliver the empty skip and collect the full skip.
  3. A wait while load, is where they deliver a skip and the driver will wait 20/30 mins while the customer loads the skip and take it away.
24
Q

What happens to the waste collected?

A

Majority of clients have their own tipping facility, weighed on a weighbridge (a large scale for the truck - gross weight), then tip the contents onto the floor and the waste is segregating materials by machine (maybe a trommel) or manually on a picking line. The vehicle and skip is then weighed again minus contents (tare weight). Then segregated raw materials are sold and move out of the facility.

25
What are grades?
Different waste types
26
How many trucks do our clients have?
From 2 to 60 trucks
27
How are the customers invoiced?
Householders usually pay via credit card before delivery, whereas accounts can pay daily, weekly, monthly.
28
How are brokers involved?
Our clients have customers that are brokers who may win the contract to collect waste, but then subcontract to skip hire companies.
29
Do all clients move their own waste out of their facility?
No, some may subcontract to a haulage company or a third party
30
Does all waste come in via the skip hire trucks?
No, it can also be a third party delivering waste e.g. a local builder unloading waste from his van
31
Name a large skip hire company
Kenny's
32
Besides drivers, what other roles are there at skip hire companies?
Customer service (accept new orders, books skips, answers queries) planners/transport coordinators (planning for jobs), weighbridge operator, accounts (billing, invoicing), sales
33
How do skip hire companies price?
Based on size, location and materials collected in skips.
34
Why would a customer want a 'wait while load'?
1. They want a quick removal. 2. Cheaper option. 3. Waste is ready.
35
What is the role of a planner?
To plan efficient routes to save time between jobs and fuel cost.
36
Give an example of how a planner would plan an efficient route.
Place a driver on successive jobs that are located close together.
