Week 2 - Aging Population Flashcards
(77 cards)
What is demography?
The study of the size, structure and distribution of human populations
What is a population pyramid?
A graph that shows the distribution of various age groups in a population
Why is Canada’s population pyramid no longer pyramid shaped?
Due to increasing life expectancy and declining fertility
What is life expectancy?
The average number of years a person is projected to life, assuming current trends
What is average age of death?
The mean age at which individuals in a population die, within a specific population at a specific time
Is life expectancy the same as average age at death?
No, life expectancy is a projection based on current trends, average age at death is the actual average at which people in a population have died
What factors contribute to increasing life expectancy?
Better medical treatment, public health improvements, health promotion, seat belts, smoking cessation
What is the epidemiological transition?
The shift from infectious to chronic diseases due to improved health systems and behaviours
What caused the epidemiological transition?
Expansion of public health and sanitation and changes in health behaviours
When does epidemiological transition happen?
During economic development when majority of the population gains reliable access to the basic needs of life
Demographic results of the epidemiological transition
People live longer (chronic disease kills slowly)
What is the most important factor in population aging?
Declining fertility rates
What were the baby boom years?
From 1946-1964, marked by a rise in fertility rates
What followed the baby boom?
The baby bust, a continuous drop in fertility rates after 1965
What is the replacement fertility rate?
2.1 children per woman
What is fertility rate?
The average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime
What is birth rate?
The number of live births per 1000 people in a population over a specific time period
What is the difference between fertility rate and birth rate?
Fertility rate is an individual measure, birth rate is a population measure
What are the causes of declining fertility rates?
- Lots of children aren’t an economic advantage anymore
- Women’s rights movement
- Family planning techniques (birth control)
What is the first stage of demographic transition?
Stage I: High fertility, high mortality
What is the second stage of demographic transition?
Stage II: High fertility, mortality declines
What is the third stage of demographic transition?
Stage III: Fertility and mortality decline
What is the fourth stage of demographic transition?
Stage IV: Low fertility, low mortality
What is the population like during stage I of demographic transition?
Lots of young people, few older people
