Week 4 - Physical Health and Aging Flashcards
(57 cards)
What percentage of older adults (65+) in Canada report good or better health?
Women: 78.8%
Men: 78.6%
Does having chronic conditions mean poor quality of life?
No, depends on medical care, education and environment (physical and social)
What is biological aging?
Progressive decline in physical function due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors
What is intrinsic aging?
Wear and tear that occurs naturally with age
What is extrinsic aging?
Aging influenced by lifestyle and environmental factors
What increases linearly with age?
Chronic diseases, disability and cognitive decline
What is mortality?
Number of deaths in a population during a given time
What is survival?
Proportion of people who are still alive after an event
What is morbidity?
Any departure from a state of health
What is disability?
Reduction in capacity to function
What are gene-environment interactions?
Interplay between biology and environment throughout life
What are life course models?
Frameworks linking adult health to exposures throughout life
What is the critical period model?
Exposure during a vulnerable time has long-term effects
What are the vulnerable ages for the critical period model?
Fetal, adolescence and early old age (65-75)
What is an example of the critical period model?
Dutch hunger winter shows fetal origins of disease
What is the accumulation of risk model?
Risk increases from long-term exposure or repeated insults
What is the chain of risk model?
One risk leads to another, increasing disease likelihood
What is an example of chain of risk model?
Violence –> depression –> less activity –> mobility decline
Example of chain of risk model (early childbirth)
Teen childbirth –> obesity –> disability
What systems does aging affect?
Cardiovascular, digestive, cognition, senses, etc.
Can age related decline be modified?
Yes, with exercise, aids and environmental changes
Why is disability important in gerontology?
Directly affects independence and quality of life
What are some standard measures of disability?
ADLs and IADLs
(also SPPB, Nagi scale and LLDI)
What are ADLs
Activities of daily living, like eating, bathing and getting dressed etc
