How is BMI worked out?
body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is expressed in units of kg/m²

What process is obesity caused by?
energy intake greater than energy expenditure and the body weights set point has an increased value
What is the hypothalamus’s role in obesity?
It receives hormones and responds with its own hormones
What is the cortex’s role in obesity?
It is responsible for how the food looks, tastes, and making the decisions about what to eat
What is the hippocampus’s role in obesity?
The area in control of remembering how yum the food was

Fat cells
What is the basic function of adipocytes?
Storage of excess energy, cushioning for organs and maintaining body warmth
What does leptin do?
Promotes satiety
Where is leptin secreted from?
Mature adipocytes
What does ghrelin do?
promotes hunger
Where is ghrelin produced from?
produced by the stomach

Abdominal obesity, hypertension, elevated serum triglycerides, low serum HDL and insulin resistance
