WEEK 6 Pulmonary Fibrosis Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is Pulmonary Fibrosis?
A restrictive disease caused by inflammation and scarring of the lungs
It is a progressive condition where the scarring and inflammation build up, known as fibrosis.
What are the common names for Pulmonary Fibrosis?
Cryptogenic Fibrosing Alveolitis or Usual Interstitial Pneumonia
These terms are often used interchangeably with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
What is the main symptom of Pulmonary Fibrosis?
Breathlessness
This symptom can be severe in some cases.
What are the typical demographics of people diagnosed with IPF in the UK?
Approx. 5,000 people diagnosed annually, more common in men, and typically affects older individuals
Men account for 6 in every 10 cases.
What are some known causes of Pulmonary Fibrosis?
- Unknown causes (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis)
- Smoking history
- Occupational exposure (dust from wood, metal, textile, stone)
- Viral infections (herpes virus, Hep C)
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
- Genetic link in some cases
These causes are often linked to the development of the disease.
What are the symptoms of Pulmonary Fibrosis?
- Constant cough
- Feeling tired all the time
- Clubbing of fingers and toes
- Breathlessness that may worsen over time
Symptoms can progress gradually or quickly.
How is Pulmonary Fibrosis diagnosed?
- Detailed patient history
- Clinical signs (breathlessness, persistent cough, clubbing)
- Spirometry
- Bronchoscopy
- Chest x-ray and CT scan
These diagnostic methods help assess the severity and presence of the disease.
What is the typical management approach for Pulmonary Fibrosis?
- O2 therapy
- Pulmonary rehabilitation
- Medications (sedatives, morphine)
- Treatment for heartburn and nasal blockage
- Lung transplant (rare)
Management focuses on alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life.
What medications are currently used to treat IPF?
- Pirfenidone (Esbriet)
- Nintedanib
Pirfenidone is used in mild to moderate cases, while Nintedanib helps reduce scarring and flare-ups.
What is included in Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
- Exercise
- Education
- Self-management
- Diet
- Lifestyle modifications
These components are essential for managing breathlessness and improving exercise tolerance.
True or False: Pulmonary Fibrosis is an infectious disease.
False
Pulmonary Fibrosis is not contagious.
Fill in the blank: The main goal of managing Pulmonary Fibrosis is to help patients manage their _______.
Breathlessness
What vaccinations should patients with Pulmonary Fibrosis consider?
- Early flu jab
- Pneumococcal vaccination
These vaccinations help prevent respiratory infections.
What lifestyle changes can patients with Pulmonary Fibrosis implement?
- Stop smoking
- Stay fit and active
- Eat a healthy balanced diet
Lifestyle modifications can significantly impact overall health and symptom management.
