ectopia
A
- displacement or malposition of an organ or other body part
- mostly congenital, but may happen later in life
"ek" = out of position; away from "topos" = a place

karyotype
A
- the number + appearance of a partial or complete set of chromosomes of an individual or a species (attention is paid to chromosomal length, the position of the centromeres, banding pattern, any differences between the sex chromosomes, and any other physical characteristics)
- picture of all the chromosomes we have, according to position
- e.g. Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21) where there are 3 chromosomes at #21
- e.g. Klinfelter’s syndrome (XXY) – manifest both male + female sex charracteristics; body form is in between male + female
"karyon" = kernal, seed, nucleus "tupos" = classification or type

tachycardia
A
- heart rate exceeds normal range (100 bpm)
- can be dangerous depending on speed or rhythm
- can be caused by coffee, stimulant drugs, adrenaline, marijuana, thyroid storm
- antonym is brachycardia (slow heart rate)
"tacheus" = rapid, fast "cardy" = heart

dyspepsia
A
- indigestion or maldigestion
- leads to chronic pain or fullness in abdomen, bloating, belching, heartburn
- frequently assoc. w/ GERD or ulcers (excess consumption of sugars + carbs linked to GERD b/c they promote growth of fungus – sugar ferments in stomach and produces alcohol,w hich affects the pyloric sphincter)
"dys" = disorder "peps" = digestion

labile
A
- easily changeable, fleeting, unstable, ephemeral
- most often used in reference to emotions, character, psychology – refers to someone easily subjected to influence of other people (in CM, this may be due to GB deficiency or weak LIV)
“labi” = to slip

opisthotonos
A
- state of severe hyperextension + spasticity of exterior myo of back
- ceates arched shape of back
- may be due to tetanus, which causes myo to contract for hours, with inability to relax
"opistho" = behind (the back) "tonos" = tension
