what is anorexia nervosa?
restriction of energy intake relative to requirements leading to low body weight
what is bulimia nervosa?
recurrent episodes of binge eating
what is purging?
recurrent inappropriate compensatory behavior to prevent weight gain
(can be either restriction type or binge-eating type)
what is binge eating disorder (BED)?
recurrent episodes of binge eating with loss of control
what are the differences between bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder?
- BN occurs at least 1x/week for at least 3 months
- BED occurs at least 1x/day for 3 months
- BED doesn’t occur exclusively in the context of AN
what is atypical anorexia nervosa?
all the criteria for AN is met however the weight is within or above normal range
what is the health belief model?
a model developed to understand why or why not people adopt behaviors for disease prevention
what are the social determinants of health?
social factors that affect health
what is allostatic load?
allostasis = the ability to achieve stability through change
what is the life course model?
a model to investigate the impact of exposure and time on health
what is the transtheoretical model?
behavior change occurs as a result on passing through sequential stages
what are the stages of the transtheoretical model?
- precontemplation - no intention to take action in the forseable future
- contemplation - thinking about changing
- preparation - deciding to make the change
- action - making specific behavior changes
- maintenance - sustaining behavior change
what are the first nutrition principles that help with ED’s?
- adequate, consistent meals
- balance of macronutrients
- variety
- moderation
- enjoyment
