Why was the background of many of the federalist supporters important ?
Typically well educated and influential writers and speakers
- made compelling arguments that circulated within states
- The federalist papers (work of Hamilton, Madison and Jay) were influential
- it was an easier task as they simply had to proposal an acceptable not offer an opposing view
Why was the geographically spread of support important ?
Towns were often heavily concentrated areas of federalist supporters
- many locals gave delegates to state ratifying conventions the impression people favored the constitution
- AF are spread out and difficult to organize
Which two figures crucially supported the constitution and why is this important ?
Washington and Benjamin Franklin
- famous men
- this alone persuaded many to support it
Why was it important that news papers supported the constitution ?
- only five newspapers out of 100 opposed the constitution
- widespread and easily accessible reasoning to support the constitution
What was difficult for anti federalist for their ideas ?
- found it difficult to provide one clear alternative
- the whole process would have to begin again
How did the compromise of 1787 help ?
It help massively
- sovereignty was shared instead of the Virginia plan which was perceived to limit state power too much
- population determining representation compromise with 2 senators and house of reps based on population
- south persuaded as it safeguarded slavery
- undermined many opposition
What was the problem for oppositions unity ?
They were heavily divided and many therefore lacked credibility due to the various ideas circulating
How were many convinced economically ?
A new constitution proposed economic growth and prosperity or at least this seemed likely
Where as old articles were accociated with unrest and upheaval
How did the bill of rights help ?
Swayed many who feared loss of individual liberty
