🧠 ¿Cómo nace…? = How does ___ begin? Common in interviews or deep convos.
💬 Pa’ ti:
“¿Cómo nace ese amor por el boxeo, si tu familia no es deportista?”
En cada entrevista, siempre notaba que la gente partía del desconocimiento.
In every interview, I always noticed people came from a place of ignorance.
🧠 Partir del desconocimiento = to come from not knowing / ignorance
💬 Pa’ ti:
“Me hacían preguntas bien básicas… se notaba que partían del desconocimiento.”
Me encabrona que allá defienden lo de Puerto Rico, ¡y JLo ni siquiera es de PR!
It pisses me off that they defend Puerto Rico stuff over there, and JLo isn’t even from PR!
🧠 Me encabrona = it pisses me off (strong PR slang)
💬 Pa’ ti:
“Me encabrona ver gente gritando Boricua y ni pisan la isla.”
Fue difícil al principio, pero pues uno se acostumbra poco a poco.
It was hard at first, but you get used to it little by little.
🧠 Uno = general “you” or “one.”
📘 Reflexive verb: se acostumbra = gets used to.
💬 Pa’ ti:
“Entrenar a las 5am fue un palo al principio, pero pues uno se acostumbra.”
Aquí prefieren lucir bonito en el ring, en vez de ser agresivos… pero allá se brega más con la agresividad.
Here they prefer to look good in the ring, instead of being aggressive… but over there, they deal more with aggression.
🧠 “Se brega” = street Puerto Rican way to say “they handle / it’s handled.”
📘 Contrast using “pero” and “en vez de” (instead of).
💬 Pa’ ti:
“En PR se brega más con fuerza y corazón, no con estar luciendo pa’l público.”
En los veranos en Puerto Rico, yo viraba fuera de forma, iba a los torneos y pillaba.
During summers in Puerto Rico, I’d come back out of shape, go to the tournaments, and get wrecked.
🧠 Virar = to return (colloquial PR), Pillar = to get caught, but here = get beat.
📘 Imperfect used for repeated actions: viraba, iba, pillaba.
💬 Pa’ ti:
“Después de janguear to’el verano, viraba a los torneos y pillaba sin condición.”
Nunca dejé de estar ranqueado número uno en cada división que tocaba.
I never stopped being ranked number one in every division I entered.
🧠 Tocaba = “touched” but here means “participated in.”
📘 “Nunca dejé de…” = I never stopped (doing something).
💬 Pa’ ti:
“Aunque subiera de peso, nunca dejé de estar ranqueado en to’s lados.”
Eso te sacaba la adrenalina, como quien dice: “vamos a ver con quién voy a pelear.”
That pumped your adrenaline, like they say: “let’s see who I’m gonna fight.”
🧠 Como quien dice = expression for “so to speak” or “like people say.”
📘 Imperfect “sacaba” = ongoing or repeated past feeling.

“Eso te sacaba la adrenalina, como quien dice: ‘ya tú sabes lo que viene.’”

Did they offer you to go pro over there in PR when you were starting out?
🧠 Debutar profesional = to make a professional debut.
📘 Preterite “ofrecieron” = completed action in past.
💬 Pa’ ti:
“¿En PR te ofrecieron debutar profesional, o fue directo en USA?”
Si se me hubiese hecho el acercamiento, me hubiese encantado representar.
If I had been approached, I would have loved to represent.
🧠 “Si se me hubiese hecho” = hypothetical past (3rd conditional).
📘 “Hubiese encantado” = past conditional wish/regret.
💬 Pa’ ti:
“No fue que no quise… si se me hubiese hecho el acercamiento, yo decía que sí al momento.
