10.2 - Catalysts Flashcards

(6 cards)

1
Q

What is the role of a catalyst?

A

Increases the rate of a chemical reaction by providing an alternate reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, without being used up

Q

How do catalysts have great economic importance and increased sustainability?

A
  • Lowering the activation energy decreases the temperature needed for the process and the energy requirements, less energy = less electricity/fuel = lower costs = increased profitability
  • Reduces energy demand from combustion of fossil fuels and results in reduced CO2 emissions
