Q

What constitutes CAT I navigation?

15
Q

What constitutes CAT II navigation?

A
  • Inertial navigation system

- Celestial

16
Q

When does GPS SPS become a CAT II navigation source?

A

When international and SA is being used, its not adequate for navigation in harbor, harbor approach, near coastal and other restricted waters

17
Q

What can you do if while underway, the fix quality comes into question while operating in restricted waters?

A
  • reduce speed as appropriate
  • take all the way off
  • increase the fix frequency
  • turning away from danger
18
Q

What constitutes an electronic fix?

A

When displayed on a chart from an adequate positioning source including radar or chart matching capabities

19
Q

What constitutes a fix on a paper chart?

A

The intersection of LOP’s from at least 3 prominent points of land, fixed and/or celestial objects with a separation of 15 degrees or greater, when using relative bearings with a minimum of 2 LOP’s and 1 radar range, if 3 LOP’s are not available advancing LOP’s to a common time to creat a running fix may be used

20
Q

What can be used to verify fixes?

A
  • soundings
  • ATON
  • radar or other electronic means
  • seamen’s eye
21
Q

When are paper charts considered up to date?

A

They are considered up to date if they are both the most current edition and corrected up to the latest LNM, WNM, BNM

22
Q

When shall set and drift be determined?

A
  • if the fix interval is 3 minutes or greater, shall be determined at every fix
  • if less than 3 minutes, shall be determined every second fix
23
Q

What constitutes an EP?

A

An estimated position is a DR position modified by additional information which in its self is insufficient to establish a fix
