NAVIGATION STANDARDS Flashcards
When shall you have your navigation standards promulgated?
With in 90 days of assuming command, the prior navigation standards shall remain in effect until suspended.
What are the 3 types of waters which must be defined in your navigation standards?
Restricted, Coastal, open ocean and any additional zones required
When shall steering and propulsion checks be conducted?
They shall be conducted prior to entering restricted waters or getting underway
Who is the only person authorized to approve all track lines and routes for cutters?
Me the OIC
If an Operations officer is not assigned to your cutter, what shall you do?
Designate a senior qualified BM as the Navigator
What are some things that should be in your Navigation Standards?
Navigation draft, definition of shoal water and the method to indicate shoal water for each navigation system as well as on paper charts, command definitions of navigation zones, fix intervals for each zone, interval for primary positioning source must be compared to an unrelated positioning source and logged, standard plotting symbols, alarm management, line handling commands, method used to indicate approved track lines, guidance on electronic chart displays including filters and scaling, guidance on cutter small boat navigation while away from the cutter, nav team manning requirements, helm commands, special sea detail, anchoring and mooring bill, list of paper charts required to be on board with which ones shall be kept up to date, ships characteristics, electronic chart data hierarchy, when to determine gyro error, AIS settings and usage, Electronic casualty control procedures, when navigation with autopilot ships controls must be logged as well as propulsion, GPS offsets during evolutions, drag and swing circle procedures, heading and speed input from radar, cross track warning and alarm settings for each navigation zone
What can be used to indicate shoal water for each navigation system as well as on paper charts?
- Safety depth
- Safety contour
- Depth below the keel
What is the interval for comparing your primary position source to a unrelated positioning source?
Shall be conducted every third fix in restricted waters in other waters it shall be conducted once a day
Where do you find the standard navigation plotting symbols?
Enclosure 1 of the Commandant’s Navigation Standards Manual
What is Alarm Management?
It states when alarms may be silenced or disabled
Where do you find your standard line handling commands?
Enclosure 2 of the Commandant’s Navigation Standards Manual
What are the only GPS corrections currently authorized?
The only GPS corrections currently authorized for CG coastal and restricted water navigation use are provided by the differential GPS system and the Wide Area Augment System (WAAS)
What is WAAS?
It is a satellite based GPS augmentation system being implemented by the FAA. WAAS is not authorized for ATON positioning
When shall you compare positioning sources while underway?
Shall be once a day in open ocean and every third fix in restricted waters
What constitutes CAT I navigation?
- GPS with DGPS corrections or WAAS enabled
- GPS PPS (precise positioning source)
- GPS SPS (standard positioning source) with selective availability set to zero
- Visual and/or radar (includes radar or chart matching)
