Symptoms?

A

Tingling or burning sensation before cold sore develops
Fluid-filled blisters
On the lips, chin, cheeks (either side of the face below the eye) or in the nostrils.

Cold sore Treatment?

A

Aciclovir apply every 4 hrs for 5-10 days
Famciclovir 500mg oral 3 tablets 1500mg as a single dose
Take pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

How to use Aciclovir?

A

apply every 4 hours (5 times daily) for 5–10 days, starting at the first sign of attack
Treatment should be continued for at least 4 days.If not fully cured then Treatment may be continued for up to 10 days.
Famciclovir 500mg — 3 tabs at once as a single dose
(pharmacist only -recurrent cold sore -( aged 18 and over) – no better in 3days, refer

Cold sore Self Care?

A

Sunblock: Use sunblock lip balm (SPF 15 or above) if you’re outside in the sun.
Use patche: Cold sore patches can protect the skin while it heals.
Use Ice: Ice, held against the blisters, or a warm wash cloth may help ease any pain.
Take pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Vege/fruit to boost the immune system. (kiwi)
Use salty water to rinse mouth to keep month hygiene : Half spoon dissolved in a glass of water

Red flags?

A

Not healing within 10 days
You have an infection near the eye,(spreading)
The cold sore is very large or painful
You have swollen, painful gums and sores in the mouth
You have a weakened immune system – for example, because of chemotherapy or diabetes.
