Sore throat
A
- Only 5% go to GP & mostly due to viral infection
- Self limiting with cold symptoms - no cold symptoms cause of worry
- Antibiotics makes no difference

Ask about age when presented with cold symptoms
A
- School age more likely to get strep and young children are more likely to get croup

Duration of sore throat question
A
- Usually only lasts a week longer than that may need a refferal

A
- Extreamly painful after 24-48hrs when other symptoms of cold are not present refferal

Other symptoms with the sore throat
A
- Cough cold ache pain with difficulty swallowing and horseness of voice reffer

Current conditions sore throat
A
- Steroid, carbimazole and immunosupressants

Laryngitis
A
- Babies and young children leading to croup
- Difficulty breathing stridor sore throat and loss of voice
- long time could be cancer
- Glandular fever severe sore throat and dysphagia

OTC treatment for sore throat
A
- Paracetamol iboprophen and asprin
- Anti-inflammatory anesthetics antiseptic lozenges and spray (strepsils)

Peritonsil abcess
A
- One side of the tonsil is swollen closing throat inability to breath

Red cheeks for children
A
- Scarlet fever

Oral candidisis
A
- Infection in the mouth and the tounge with white patches
- Leaves red spots after cottage cheese like

When do you usually get oral thrush
A
- After antibiotics in adults or inhaled corticosteroids

Oral thrush accompany symptoms
A
- Babies don’t want feed may have a nappy rash
- Cracks at corners of mouth
- Unplesent taste difficult to eat and drink with pain

Treatment for oral thrush
A
- Miconazole antifungal 4 times daily twice a day for younger
- Interacts with warfrin and statins
