What is a hormone?
A chemical substance released in small quantities from certain glands that travel through teh circulatory system to elicit a specific response in other cells.
Includes Neurohormones.
DOES NOT include intracellular messengers like cyclic AMP, local mediators like Nitric Oxide, CO2
What are some examples of Neuroendocrine
Posterior Pituitary, Adrenal Medulla, Hypothalmic releasing hormones.
Three general categories of hormones?
- Steroids and Steroid like hormones
- Amino Acid Derivatives
- Peptide and Proteins
Steroids and steroid like hormones are derived from what?
Cholesterol

Specifically Tyrosine

What is permissive action
A hormone that allows another hormone to work better. Example: Thyroid hormone allowing epinephrine to mobilize large amounts of fatty acids by causing an increased number of epinephrine receptors

1) Amplify hormone signaling
