> 28 days or the normal dating period of the blood, which ever comes first
(irradiation uses Cesium-137 or Cobalt-60)

> GVH reactions, BM trnsplant, direct donation from a blood relative, exchange transfusion, IUT, transfusion for immunocompromised patients

> T cells are responsible for initiating the graft vs host reaction

Why should an immunodeficient recipient of blood receive irradiated blood when dealing with T cells?
A
- To prevent the lymphocytes in the donor blood unit from triggering a graft-versus-host reaction (GVHR) in the immunodeficient recipient.
