Coast transportation Flashcards
Longshore drift definition
material transported along coasts
How does transportation of material work
waves follow the direction of the wind, usually hitting the coast at an angle, swash carries material up the the beach with the waves, backwash then carries material down the beach perpendicular to the coast towards the sea, over time material zig zags along the coast
4 processes of transportation
traction, saltation, solution, suspension
Traction definition
large stones or boulders are pushed along the sea bed by the force of the water
Saltation definition
pebble-sized particles are bounced along the sea bed by the force of the water
Suspension
small particles like silt are carried along in the water
Solution
soluble materials dissolve in the water and are carried along
Deposition definition
material being carried by the seawater is dropped on the coast
When does deposition occur
when water carrying sediment slows down so it isn’t moving fast enough to carry so much sediment
Deposition is increases when
lots of erosion (lots of material), lots of transportation, low energy waves (can carry in material but not strong enough to carry it away)
Which waves carry in more material and their features
constructive waves, low frequency, low and long, swash is powerful and carries material up, backwash is weak so doesn’t take material back down
