overcultivation - land is continaully sed for c rops and does not have time to recover so the nutrients are taken out and turns to dust, overgrazing - animals have eaten all the vegetation leaving the soil bare, deforestation - cutting down trees leave the soil open to erosion by wind and rain, climate change - decrease in rainfall and rise in temperature causes vegetation to die

Oxfam has worked with villagers training them in processes such as bunding which is building lines of stones across a slope to stop water and soil running away, this preserves the topsoil and improves farming and food production
