What is affiliation?
Need to form attachments to other people for support, guidance, and protection
What are some positive aspects of affiliation?
- From brith we seek connections to others
- Relationships increase self-esteem
- People with social connection experience less depression
- people in healthy relationships live longer
What are some negative consequences of affiliations?
- People stay in abuse relationships and join gangs in an effort to belong
- Social exclusion activates the same region of the brain as physical pain (anterior cingulate cortex)
- Long-term isolation can lead to permanent psychological damage
What does the self determination they say?
Suggests tat competence, relatedness, and autonomy give meaning to life and are instinctive
Describe the Achievement:Delaying Gratification
- Social Motivations are learned
- Need to learn to work towards long-term goals
- Requires relay of gratification and impulse control
- Prefrontal correct is necessary to comprehend and develop long-term goals - fully developed after puberty
What is an emotion?
an intrapersonal state in response to an internal or external event
What are the four components of emotion?
- Physiological - changes in bodily arousal
EX: increase in heart rate - Cognitive, feeling - subjective appraisal and temptation of one’s feelings and environment
- Physical, behavioural - expression of emotion verbally or no verbally EX: smiling
- Emotional, behavioural - keeping the emotion present (happiness) or removing it (sadness)
