A medical emergency of inflammation of the epiglottis and surrounding structures

Who normally gets epiglottitis?
A
Infants

Which bacteria causes epiglottitis?
A
H influenzae B is the most common
Others include Strep pneumoniae, group A Strep

How does epiglottitis present?
A
- Severe sore throat and painful swallowing
- Muffled/Hot Potato voice
- Stridor
- Respiratory distress
- Tripod/Sniffing position
- Fever

What should you NOT do if you suspect epiglottitis?
A
Examine the throat

How is epiglottitis investigated?
A
- Mainly clinical
- Neck radiograph: thumb sign
- Blood cultures and throat swab

How is epiglottitis managed?
A
- Airway management
- Abx: Third Gen Cephalosporin: Ceftriaxone
- Fluids, analgesics, antipyretics
