What is the pathophysiology of vestibular neuronitis?

A
  • Inflammation of the vestibular nerve distorts the signals from the vestibular system to the brain, resulting in episodes of vertigo

How does vestibular neuronitis present?

A
  • Recent VURTI
  • Acute onset of vertigo, which may be worse with head movement
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Balance problems
  • NO NEURO SIGNS - this helps differentiate from stroke
  • NO TINNITUS OR HEARING LOSS

A
  • Prochlorperazine
  • Antihistamines
  • Referral if symptoms do not improve after a week
