What is quinsy?
A
Peritonsillar abscess - a complication of untreated or partially treated tonsillitis

How does quinsy form?
A
Bacterial infection with trapped pus forms an abscess

Which organisms cause quinsy?
A
- Strep Pyogenes (group A Strep)
- Staph aureus
- H influenzae

How does quinsy present?
A
- Sore throat
- Painful swallowing
- Fever
- Neck/Ear pain
- Lymphadenopathy
- Trismus (unable to open mouth)
- Hot potato voice

How is quinsy managed?
A
- Needle aspiration/Surgical incision and drainage by ENT
- Abx before and after surgery
