What is rhino sinusitis?
A
Inflammation of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity

What are the 2 types of rhinosinusitis?
A
Acute - less than 12 weeks
Chronic - more than 12 weeks

What are the 4 paranasal sinuses?
A
- Frontal sinuses
- Maxillary sinuses
- Ethmoidd sinuses
- Sphenoid sinuses

What are the causes of sinusitis?
A
- Infection, usually after VURTI
- Allergies such as hayfever
- Obstruction of draining e.g due to foreign body, trauma
- Smoking

How does sinusitis present?
A
- Nasal congestion
- Nasal discharge
- Facial pain or headache
- Facial pressure
- Loss of smell
- Fever

What is chronic sinusitis associated with?
A
Nasal polyps

How is rhino sinusitis managed?
A
- Admission if systemic infection
- Self resolving within 2-3 weeks
- High dose nasal spray for 14 days if symptoms persisted longer than 10 days e.g Mometasone
- Delayed Abx prescription if worsening e.g Pen V

What is the management of chronic sinusitis?
A
- Saline nasal irrigation
- Steroid nasal sprays/drops
- FESS Surgery
