What is presbycusis?
A
A type of sensorineural hearing loss which affects the elderly

What is the pathophysiology of presbycusis?
A
- Loss of hair cells in the cochlea
- Loss of neurones in the chochlea
- Atrophy of the stria vascularis

What are risk factors for presbycusis?
A
- Age
- Male
- FH
- Loud noise exposure
- Diabetes
- HTN
- Smoking

How does presbycusis present?
A
- Gradual onset
- Loss of high pitched sounds first
- May have associated tinnitus
- These patients more likely to develop dementia

How is presbycusis managed?
A
- Audiometry to confirm diagnosis
- Optimise environment
- Hearing aids/Cochlear implants
