What is vestibular neuronitis?
A
Inflammation of the vestibular nerve

What is the pathophysiology of vestibular neuronitis?
A
- Inflammation of the vestibular nerve distorts the signals from the vestibular system to the brain, resulting in episodes of vertigo

How does vestibular neuronitis present?
A
- Recent VURTI
- Acute onset of vertigo, which may be worse with head movement
- Nausea and vomiting
- Balance problems
- NO NEURO SIGNS - this helps differentiate from stroke
- NO TINNITUS OR HEARING LOSS

What test can be done to diagnose peripheral causes of vertigo?
A
Head impulse test

How is vestibular neuronitis managed?
A
- Prochlorperazine
- Antihistamines
- Referral if symptoms do not improve after a week
- Vestibular rehab therapy can be used
