Q

What is the function and examples of skeletal ligaments

A

Jones bone to bone (or cartilage) across joints
Two types:
- dense bundle of collagen fibres
- dense bundle of elastin fibres

Q

What is the nuchal ligament like?

A

Large elastic structure
Has funicular part (elastic cord)
Lamellar part (fibrous septum)

Q

What is the lamellar part of the neck like?

A

lamellar part is sheet-like and connects the funicular part to the cervical vertebral column only between the 2nd and 6th cervical vertebrae. The nuchal ligament is mainly composed of an elastic-like material

8
Q

How does the nuchal ligament contribute to the head and neck locomotion

A

By storing and releasing the elastic strain energy, to help pull head back up
Stretches at each stride to prevent head/ neck descending on every stride

Q

What is retinaculae?

A

Keeps tendon close to bone and strapped down
Band of thickened deep fascia
Tissue similar to ligaments, don’t serve joint directly

Q

What is the structure of ligaments like?

A

Collagen fibres arranged in multiple directions, but not irregular like fascia
10% elastin
