Q

How does primary ossification work?

A

Hyaline cartilage is where a future bone will be
Perichondrium of bone will begin to form osteoblasts, making bone collar
Chondrocytes begin to enlarge, everything around them begins to calcify
Chondrocyres die and leaves behind cavity which gets so large, it brings blood vessels and stem cells
Osteoblasts deposit bone matrix
Osteoclasts reabsorb bone matrix, making hollow cavity

Q

Where does enchondral ossification take place?

A
  1. Physis (growth plate)
  2. Artocular wpiphysed cartilage complex
  3. Cuboidal bones

Q

What are cartilage canals

A

Channels within the cartilage, containing an arteriole, venules and capillaries
Provides blood to growth cartilage

9
Q

Why does osteochondrisis happen

A

Failure of blood vessels in cartilage canal, causing chondronecrosis at junction between cartilage and bone (lower layers where bone needs to replace cartilage). Necrotic regions don’t ossify

16
Q

What causes an angular limb deformity

A

Early closure of one side of the growth plates
Can be congenital or due to trauma

17
Q

What is the definition of an angular limb deformity

A

Deviation in the long axis of the limb in the frontal plane

18
Q

What are valgus and varus deformities

A

Valgus —>deviates laterally distal to site of deformity
Varus —> deviates medially distal to the site of deformity
