(14 cards)
As we start at the top row and move down, do the amount of shells get greater or less?
The number of shells get greater.
The further down we move, is it easier or harder for an atom to give up its valence electrons?
It gets easier as we move down the periodic table for an atom to give up its valence electrons.
The further right we move across the periodic table, does it get easier or harder for an atom to give up its valence electrons?
As we move further right, it gets harder for an atom to give up its valence electrons.
What is the biggest difference in electronegativity between two atoms for it still to be a non-polar covalent bond?
0.5
What’s the difference between intra- and inter-
Intra- means inside and inter- means among or between.
What is stronger, intra- or inter-molecular forces?
Intramolecular forces are 25x stronger than intermolecular forces
What is a dipole-dipole interaction?
A dipole-dipole is a intermolecular interaction between two polar molecules.
What is a hydrogen bond?
A hydrogen bond is when Hydrogen is bonded with either F, O, or N. Hydrogen becomes so partially positive that it will be attracted to another negative atom in a molecule.
What are dispersion forces, or Van Der Waals?
These occur with non-polar molecules, caused by temporary dipole movement; patches of different charges.
What is an ion-ion intermolecular force?
When large ionic solids are held together by networks of ionic bonds.
What is an ion dipole intermolecular force?
An ion dipole is when an ion interacts with a molecule with a dipole
What is dipole-dipole?
When two polar molecules interact.
What is absolute zero?
Zero heat, so zero movement.
Most molecules have what type of charges?
Partial positive or partial negative charge.
