1.8 part 2 and 1.9 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What does a haloalkane look like?
A haloalkane has a group 7 halogen attached the the R group. The halogens are F, Cl, Br, and I.
BrIClF
What does an Ether look like?
R-O-R
Two R groups with an O in between.
What does a Ketone look like?
A carbonyl with R groups on either side. A carbonyl is a Carbon atom double-bonded to Oxygen.
R-C(–O)-R
What does an Amine look like?
amine– amiNe
Nitrogen is bonded to the R group.
Example:
R-NH2
What does an Amide look like?
An Amide is like an Amine, but it has a carbon double-bound to an oxyygen.
amiDe
D= double bond oxygen.
What does an Amino Acid look like?
Amino acids have a central carbon atom attached to a hydrogen, an acidic carboxyl group (−COOH), an amino group (−NH2) and an R group.
What does an Ester look like?
RCOOR’
R group, C double-bound to Oxygen, then single-bound to Oxygen, which is bound to another R group.
What is the difference between a saturated and an unsaturated fat?
Saturated: all hydrogens possible
Unsaturated: Double bonded carbon, meaning that not all hydrogens are there that could be. This creates a “kink”.
What is an metal alloy?
A metal alloy is a substance that combines more than one metal or mixes a metal with other non-metallic elements.
What is the chemical structure of a metal?
Sea of electrons
What is the chemical structure of semi conductors?
Covalent bonds
What is the chemical structure of polymers?
Polymers are bound by covalent forces and weak Van Der Waals forces, and usually based on H, C, and other non-metal elements.
