Give some causes of respiratory acidosis (3)

  • Drug overdose
  • Severe COPD
  • Head injuries/neurological/muscle disease (anything reducing lung movement)

Give some causes of respiratory alkalosis (2)

  • Panic attack 
  • Hyperventilation due to low O2 levels eg pulmonary embolism

Give some causes of metabolic acidosis

  1. Diabetic ketoacidosis
  2. Lactic acidosis (eg due to septic. shock) 
  3. Excessive diarrhoea (loss of bicarbonate) 
  4. AKI/CKI
