Q

What did Johann Radon do?

A

Published a mathematical proof in 1917(at this time had no application)that is now the basis for CT construction.

Q

3rd generation characteristics

A
  • Rotate-rotate scanner
  • Could go 360 degree around
  • X-ray in an arch
  • More detectors 250-750
  • Scanned faster
  • Tube and detectors rotated in unison
  • CONS Left a ring artifact and the cord would get wound up

Q

Explain what an Electron Beam CT (EBCT) is:

A

AKA as ultrafast CT. It differs from conventional CT because it uses a large electron gun as its x-ray source. A massive anode is placed in a semicircular ring around the patient. Neither the x-ray beam source or the detectors move. Used for cardiac imaging 5th generation

Q

List five CT advancements in Diagnostic Imaging.

A

1. Multi Row Detector Scanners

2. Dual Source CT scanner

3. Volume Scanning- CT fluoroscopy, CT angiography, 3D imaging, virtual reality imaging

4. Radiation Therapy- could be used in treatment planning with the stimulation process

5. Nuclear medicine- the CT scanner can be combined with a PET scanner. “SPECT”
ETC—Mobile Scanning, air port security, paleontology, livestock, logging, art

12
Q

State the importance of increasing the number of detectors for computed tomography images.

A

It improves the diagnostic quality of CT images and reduces the time for helical studies. Also, more detectors allows more information to be obtained. More detectors, more rows= more information

13
Q

Describe the purpose of the “bow tie” filter used in computed tomography.

A

To reduce the beam intensity at the periphery of the beam corresponding to the thinner areas of patient’s anatomy. Also increases the image quality

16
Q

Identify at least three major advantages of Computed Tomography as compared to Conventional Radiography

A

1. Elimination of superimposed structures
2.Gives the ability to differentiate small differences in density of anatomic structures and abnormalities.
3. Superior quality images, superior contrast resolution
4. Better visualization of fractures.
5. Decreased needed time to produce Images

17
Q

What have you learned about CT from this unit that you didn’t know before? Essay.

A

◾️CT use outside of the medical field
◾️the multiple generations of scanners
◾️what year the first ct machine was used in US
◾️who created the CT
