3.4 - technology strategies Flashcards
(12 cards)
what is a automated production line
A series of sequential workstations using
machines/equipment controlled by an electrical system that can increase efficiency, accuracy, speed of workflow and can safely produce a large volume of products. Eg an automated production line such as at Yakult or Ikea
what is robotics
programmable machines that are controlled by computers to perform complex or repetitive tasks in the manufacture of products or provision of services.
what is computer aided design
a software tool that allows a business to create product possibilities (designs) using a computer program to draft and re-draft designs that can be viewed on screen prior to production allowing accurate costing and materials
calculations.
what is computer aided manufacturing techniques
A method of manufacturing in which the entire production process is controlled by the computer. It is the software communicating with the equipment (robotics) instructing what needs to happen according to what designs have been entered
what is artificial intelligence
The development of computer programs that can collect and
extract data and adapt information into useable forms with human-like responses.
what is online services
Any information or exchanges that a business offers over the internet including websites and is often enhanced by the ability to use e-commerce to exchange
payment for services.
advantages and disadvantages of automated production lines
Advantages are increases accuracy and consistency and reduces human error producing a high quality product. And improves the speed of production and increases productivity by using machinery that performs
repetitive tasks
Disadvantages are very expensive to purchase technology or equipment with most automated production lines needing to be individualised for the business needs. And high maintenance costs to keep equipment functioning efficiently
advantages and disadvantages of robotics
Advantages are improves the speed of production and increases productivity by using machinery that performs repetitive tasks and can be programmed with precision to improve quality. And decreases the need for human labour and therefore reduces costs with robots not needing to take rest breaks.
Disadvantages are high maintenance costs to keep robots functioning efficiently and robots require upgrading constantly to maintain competitiveness and employees have to be trained to use and program the robots.
advantages and disadvantages of computer aided design
Advantages decreases the need for human labour and therefore reduces costs as calculations and designs can be performed using the CAD software. And increases accuracy and consistency and reduces human error as the software is able to accurately calculate and draw in 3D.
Disadvantages are cost of continually upgrading software increases the costs of the business. And the cost of purchasing software increases the costs of the business
advantages and disadvantages of computer aided manufacturing
Advantages are improves the speed of production and increases productivity using computers to control production. And increases accuracy and consistency and reduces human error as computers will follow instructions as they have been
programmed.
Disadvantages are very expensive to purchase technology to control production and high maintenance costs to keep equipment functioning efficiently.
advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence
Advantages are increases productivity by using computer programs to solve problems, gain data or provide information at a very fast rate. And decreases the need for human labour as AI can replace the need for employees and therefore reduces costs.
Disadvantages are AI relies on the speed of the internet and access to AI providers. If access is not available a lot of time can be wasted. And there is a high risk of data being stolen or manipulated so any online activities has cyber-security risks.
advantages and disadvantages of online services
Advantages are improves the speed of providing online services as interactions
between the business and customers can occur at any time. And increases accuracy and consistency and reduces human error
as the online information/services allow the exact information to be delivered to each customer.
Disadvantages are requires IT skills and the need to update information which is
often beyond the skills of existing managers or employees, therefore increasing training or consultancy costs. And online services rely on the speed of the internet. If access is not available or interrupted, complaints, reversals of
transactions or refunds can waste a lot of time and damage a businesses reputation.
