What is the action of ARBs
They block the action of angiotensin 2 at the receptor sites
Angiotensin 2 is a
Is a super powerful Vasoconstrictor that will increase BP
It also causes the secretion of
ALDOSTERONE which is a hormone in the adrenal glands that also elevates the BP
What are the effects of ARBs
- They lower BP and workload of the heart. Vessels (arteries and veins) dilate!
- Helps kidney excrete sodium and water
ARBs 4 contraindications
Patients with
- ) grapefruit
- )hyperkalemia
- )renal failure.
- )Pregnancy/breastfeeding
Ace Inhibitors

Lisinopril ( zestril)
Ace inhibitor
Catopril (capoten)
Ace inhibitor
Enalapril (vasotec)

What is the action of ace inhibitors
They block the enzyme that convert angiotensin 1 into angiotensin 2
What are the effect of ace inhibitors
- They lower BP and workload of the heart. Vessels (arteries and veins) dilate!
- Helps kidney excrete sodium and water
Ace inhibitors contraindicated
A side effect is-
Avoid?
Patients with hyperkalemia or
Pregnancy/breastfeeding
Avoid potassium supplements
A side effect is -angioedma
