what is atelectasis
A
-str collapse of part of lung– impedes expansion the affected part is non fx
(airlessness part of lung is airlessness b/c structurally collapsed)

A
- obstructive/reabsorptive atelectasis
- compression atelectasis
- contraction atelectasis

obstructive/re-absorptive atelectasis
A
-airway obstruction (eg. by mucus) –air trapped– absorbed into capillaries–local collapse

compression atelectasis
A
external pressure on lungs (eg. tumor)

contraction atelectasis
A
scar tissue on lungs or pleura contracts & collpases lung

mnfts of atelectasis
A
- dyspnea
- tachypnea(increased resp rate)
- tachycardia (compensatory response)
- trachial shift or trachial deviation (more pressure on side that works will cause trachea to shift towards side that is affected)

what causes trachial shift or trachial deviation
A
more pressure on side that works with no atelectasis will cause trachea to shift towards side that is affected and has atelectasis

Diagnosing atelecatsis
A
- physical exam
- chest x-ray
- CT
- bronchoscopy
