  • a phrase is like a sentence. some sentences end with a period, some with a question mark, and others with a exclamation point etc… now phrases and cadential figures follow the same concept

  • this structure governs nearly all harmonic motion in music

  • the absence of the final closure leaves the listening feeling incomplete
  • the opening tonic area must be established in order to allow the key/mode to be clearly seen/heard
  • a root position tonic triad will begin the phrase typically
  • the following can expand the tonic area:
    • repeating or arpeggiating the tonic triad
  • -combining root-position and inverted tonic triads
    • adding passing and/or neighbor tones between chord members
  • the dominant chord may be used to extend the opening tonic as well
    • use of an anacrusis
    • most of the V chords that will be used will NOT be in root position
