  • parallel periods are when you have two phrases that share the same motive and harmonic structure but have slightly different endings
    • usually the first phrase will end in a half cadence with the second ending in a PAC
  • contrasting periods are when you have two phrases that do not share the same motive or harmonic structure
    • usually the fist phrase will end with a half cadence and the second with a PAC
  • an antecedent-consequent pair is a question and answer. most commonly the structure of this is a sentence ending with a HC then a sentence with a PAC
    • remember a sentence is a two measure motive, two measure motive and a four measure motive
