types of cadence

A
  • Authentic Cadence (AC)
    • V-I
    • two kinds of AC
    • Perfect authentic cadence (PAC)
  • – perfect octave between soprano and bass in tonic
  • – both chords are in root position
  • – tonic is approached by a step in the tonic
  • – since it sounds so final, this is how pieces end
    • Imperfect authentic cadence (IAC)
    • anything that is an AC that is not a PAC such as chords are not root position or the soprano does not have the root of the tonic
  • Half Cadence
    • ends on a dominant chord (V)
    • unlike the AC it does not need a preparation. if just needs to end on V
    • the preceding chord can be a variety of chords
    • the purpose is to continue the thought
