The viio6 - Doubling and Resolving Flashcards

1
Q

the viio chord

A
  • when writing the viio chord we use the model :T-PD-D-T (I-IV-(ii)V-I)
  • remember that the viio chord is naturally diminished because it has a m3rd on top and bottom creating a diminished 5th interval
    • the viio chord can be used to substitue the dominate chord. the reason for this is because it has a tendency to lead towards the V chord
    • the V7 chord has 3 notes in common with viio chord
  • the viio chord is called the Leading-Tone chord and is usually seen in first inversion. This helps hide the dissonance
    • never ever double the leading tone
  • when resolving the viio6 chord, the A4th likes to resolve outward or in similar motion to the P4th
    • the A4th likes to resolve to a m6th
    • the d5th likes to resolve inwards to m3rd
    • using parallel tenths to resolve the viio chord is possible but remember that the mass must move parallel to the soprano
