  • used to set up the V before the cadence since they share a bass note
  • always double the bass (5th)
  • approach the chord from a predominant chord. keep common tones in the same voice
  • write the chord on a strong beat to displace the dominant chord
  • resolve the suspended tones downward by a step
  • the resulting soprano voice will be a 1-7-1 or 3-2-1 leading to a PAC
