Q

Radioactive decay progresses along a _____, which creates new ______ that also decay. The decay proceeds to a _____.

A

Radioactive decay progresses along a decay chain, which creates new unstable elements that also decay. The decay proceeds to a stable endpoint.

6
Q

How can you tell the difference between the crust and the mantle?

A

By looking at the Nd ratio. Sm prefers to stay in the mantle and Nd goes into crustal melts.

constant.

17
Q

3 kinds of unconformity

A

Angular unconformity
Nonconformity
Disconformity

18
Q

Oil and gas are typically derived from

A

plankton

19
Q

What do geologists use to locate traps?

A

Seismic-reflection profiles

20
Q

Oil window

A

90-160 degrees C. Oil is being produced when rock is heated to 90 degrees.

21
Q

Gas window

A

160-250 degrees C. Oil turns to gas.

22
Q

Perosity

A

Open pore space within a sedimentary rock.

23
Q

Permeability

A

Ease of fluid flow through a rock.

24
Q

All crude oil must be

A

refined.

25
Q

Coal

A

Carbon rich sedimentary rock made up of the altered remains of fossil vegetation that grew in swamps.

26
Q

Biofuels

A

Turning plants into fuel. Turn plant into sugar, add heat and pressure, creates fuel.

27
Q

2 types of mineral resources

A

Metals and non metals.

28
Q

The hydrocarbon system is made up of

A

Source rock
Migration pathway
Reservoir rock
Seal

29
Q

Energy sources derived from sunlight

A
Wood
Coal
Oil
Natural gas
Hydropower
30
Q

Energy sources not derived from sunlight

A

Nuclear
Tidal
Fuel cells

31
Q

Explain how we get oil and gas with plankton.

A

Plankton is buried with clay and organic ooze. This is an oxygen poor environment. The burial transforms ooze into source rock, heat converts organics into oil. Oil migrates up into a reservoir rock and is kept in a trap by a seal rock.
